First United Methodist Church
Memphis, TN

First United Methodist Church has been in the same location in downtown Memphis for 182 years. In October 2006, the 1891 Gothic building (their third building) was destroyed in a fire. Hord Architects was selected to design a new 13,000 square foot church building plus renovation of an existing 32,000 square foot Christian Education building. The new building is designed in the Gothic Revival tradition. The exterior incorporates limestone, Mankato stone, brick, and a base re-using the original granite. Goals include permanence and transcendence.
